Anorak History

The anorak was originally designed by the Inuit people to ward off the harsh temperaments of nature encountered by those dwelling in the Arctic. The hooded garments were often made from seal or caribou skin and were regularly treated with fish oil to retain its water and wind resistant properties. Originally made for the purpose of hunting and kayaking in the Arctic, the anorak is now favoured by those who spend a lot of time outdoors, such as hikers and climbers. Due to the anorak’s practicality, it inevitably led to its evolution into a versatile yet stylish outer garment, gaining popularity even amongst the non-polar inclined.

The modern version of the anorak is a hooded pull over jacket without a front opening and was worn and made popular by soldiers during WWII. It was utilized by the Navy in their wet weather uniform- a green parka style garment worn by landing craft crews, ground forces, and similar groups during World War II. The top was a pull-over with attached hood and three buckle throat closure, which later evolved into a lace up throat closure. After the war the anorak was popularized by mountaineers and later became widespread amongst various subcultures.

Waxed Cotton

The material used to create this jacket was developed by seafaring men and is considered one of the oldest materials still used today. Centuries ago, sailors noticed that their sails caught wind better when wet, however wet sails were also heavy sails. To solve this problem, Scottish sailors in the mid-19th century discovered that they could cure the fabric, allowing the sails to receive water on the surface while preventing water from soaking in. They did this by applying linseed oil to the sailcloth. This practice was eventually applied to their capes, also known as the precursor to the fisherman’s slicker, making the fabric waterproof. However, linseed oil yellowed as it aged, which also affected the colouring of the capes. In the 1930s, a new process where cotton cloth was infused with paraffin wax was introduced, largely replacing the application of linseed oil, and therefore eliminating the problem with yellowing. Fabric derived through this process became known as waxed canvas (or waxed cotton).

After its initial creation at sea, the use of waxed canvas spread to the military, as its waterproof nature allowed it to be the fabric of choice for clothing for the British Armed Forces during World War II. This resulted in Britain having the only military with waterproof clothing. As time passed, the use of waxed canvas eventually spread to uniforms, tents, and duffels due to its durability, comfort, and water resistance.

The emergence of commercial use of waxed canvas began after World War II, where it was used in heavy duty rainwear, which was primarily used by farmers and gamekeepers. This practice was later adopted by motorcyclists, who created a whole new specialist market for waxed canvas motorcycle clothing and gear.

At present, waxed canvas is utilized in a wide variety of things ranging from clothing and shoes to bags and camping gear. It is important to note that waxed canvas is one of those rare examples of a fabric invention that has stood the test of time. And while the methods and applications for this material have gradually changed over the years, the history of waxed canvas remains strong and colourful.

Our Story

Inspired by the US Navy Anorak from WWII for its functionality and unique aesthetics, our aim was to create a piece that would be a great alternative for those rainy days where hoodies just aren’t providing the right feel. In today’s time there is a large range of synthetic fabrics that can provide better water resistant qualities for garments. However, we decided to stay true to the original method of waterproofing garments and constructed the anorak entirely with waxed cotton because of its natural look and its tendency to develop a beautiful patina as the garment ages. With our custom addition of functional yet stylish features, this is a perfect piece for those who not only enjoy the great outdoors and being active, but also a relaxing trip to the local coffee shop.

Key Features

Waxed Cotton Twill

The material we chose for the anorak is a heavyweight cotton twill that is characterized by a diagonal weave pattern on the surface of the fabric. The twill weave pattern results in a very sturdy and thick fabric and is extremely tear resistant compared to other types of fabrics. Moreover, the fabric is coated with a layer of wax which provides excellent water resistance. As the garment ages it will develop a patina that is unique to each piece giving the anorak its individual character.
