Specs & Stache Olive Varsity Jacket
Varsity Jacket History
The origins of the varsity jacket can be traced back to 1865 when the baseball team at Harvard University was the first known group of students who wore uniforms with a sewn-on patch that represented their school and association to the team. Due to demands for sturdier and warmer garments, the varsity jacket as we know it now was eventually introduced in the 1930s, which was constructed with a wool body and leather sleeves.
Originally designed to reward baseball players in their teams as a token for exceptional performance, the varsity jacket eventually became a staple clothing item worn to represent the social identities of athletes as well as to reflect a strong sense of team spirit, pride of belonging to a particular school and values of collectivism. As the trend of varsity jackets spread amongst colleges and teenagers after WWII and with the increasing number of university students, the concept was expanded to award the performance of students in aspects other than sports, representing a student’s identity through their school’s initials.
Since its introduction the varsity jacket has gained wide acceptance amongst its audience and serves as a canvas for fashion brands today to express their message and display their designs. After nearly a century the silhouette of the varsity jacket remains timeless and unchanged and is still a practical yet stylish garment for everyday wear.
Our Story
When you hike through the lush terrains of Jasper, Alberta, you will be immediately surrounded by various shades of green from the numerous different types of trees and plants that make up the many forests in the area. The beautiful scenes of nature in our national park was the source of inspiration for our varsity jacket. Hence, we wanted to reflect the beauty of the great outdoors by creating a jacket with three different shades of green, which represent the subtle differences in the colour of the plants when viewed individually while creating a perfect harmony of green when viewed in its entirety. Moreover, our intention was to create a lightweight jacket that would provide a perfect balance between comfort and warmth while also being suitable for a stroll through forest trails or simply paying a visit to your local coffee shop.
